The Ella Hirsch Legacy Society honors those who have chosen to shape the future of the Portland Art Museum through planned giving. By naming the Museum as a beneficiary of their estate, their generosity helps ensure that art, culture, and community remain vital for generations to come. Being honored through the Ella Hirsch Legacy Society signifies more than a commitment-it reflects a shared belief in the enduring power of art to inspire, connect, and enrich lives. These visionary supporters carry forward the spirit of Ella Hirsch herself, whose legacy continues to make a profound impact nearly a century later.
About Ella Hirsch
In 1937, as the U.S. was emerging from the Great Depression, the Portland Art Museum received a significant gift valued at $853,000 (equivalent to $19 million today) from Miss Ella Hirsch in honor of her parents, Solomon and Josephine Hirsch.
The Solomon and Josephine Hirsch Memorial Wing opened in 1939 and more than doubled the size of the Museum. It provided a lasting tribute to her parents, who had influenced Ella with their philanthropic and community-minded spirit. The balance of the gift established the Ella Hirsch Endowment Fund for the acquisition of new art objects. Since its establishment, earnings from the endowment fund have paid for nearly 100 new works of art, including prints by Picasso and Gauguin and the famous lithograph The Englishman at the Moulin Rouge by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (1864-1901).

Through the provisions of her will, Ella memorialized her parents and expressed what was important to her family-not only art but also community service.
Following this remarkable contribution, the Ella Hirsch Legacy Society was formed to encourage and assist individuals in planning their own major, endowed, and deferred gifts to the Museum.
Ella Hirsch Legacy Society Recognition
Members of the Ella Hirsch Legacy Society experience a legacy of giving and join the ranks of those who have given so much to the Museum over the years. Those who have included the Museum in their long-term giving plans, such as wills, trusts, and named endowments, are recognized as members of the Ella Hirsch Legacy Society in print materials and online. Special events for members are also held throughout the year.
